The golden way is to be friends with the world and to regard the whole human family as one.'— Mahatma Gandhi

Approximately three billion people in the world still cook using open fires or simple stoves using kerosene, wood, charcoal, coal and other biomass. In Uganda fire wood and charcoal are used by most of the population and this has resulted in widespread deforestation, which if left to continue, is expected to lead to Uganda losing all of its forests by 2050. As firewood becomes ever harder to find and charcoal becomes ever more expensive this is forcing more and more families into fuel poverty. Yet Uganda has been ranked 6th in a list of the top 25 countries identified with the greatest solar cooking potential by Solar Cookers International (SCI), which has estimated that the number of people in Uganda with fuel scarcity but ample sun will be 7,500,000 by 2020.

In response, ESN Bigger Meals Clean Technology Ltd has been founded to design a durable and efficient solar box cooker for mass industrial production. Solar cookers have been around for a long time and there are many designs, however, designing an efficient solar cooker for industrial mass production is relatively new. Ultimately our goal is to manufacture efficient and effective cookers for $10 US and under to make them affordable to people living on less than $2 US a day. Ideally they will be made mostly from recycled plastics and materials. Please see our solar oven and water pasteuriser leaflet for more information.

The company also plans to manufacture cheap rainwater storage tanks and energy-efficient rocket stoves to work alongside the solar cookers to help reduce the approximately 842,000 deaths per year caused by waterborne parasites and bacterium according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). (One billion people are thought to currently lack access to clean water.).

Then to help keep global warming under 1.5° C we will aim to share our designs and know-how with the global community free of charge so our products can be made available as soon as possible to the approximately three billion people worldwide who are presently thought to be reliant on non-renewable fuel for cooking food and boiling water. To achieve this we will aim to create a climate disaster prevention consultancy service. It will document our activities and design rapid replication programs and best practice guides so other organisations worldwide can successfully replicate what we have done as quickly and efficiently as possible.
